What are RFP and GFP Antibodies?

Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) and Red Fluorescent Protein (RFP) are ~29 kDa fluorescent proteins commonly used as markers for gene expression and protein localization. They can also be used to monitor physiological processes or detect transgenic or transient protein expression. GFP originated from Aequorea victoria jellyfish, while DsRed was isolated from sea anemone Discosoma sp..

As GFP and DsRFP share only 19% identity, anti-GFP antibodies cannot recognize DsRed protein and vice versa. Although the two are similar in terms of overall fold (a β-can) and chromophore-formation chemistry, RFP undergoes additional steps in the chromophore maturation and obligates tetrameric structure. GFP and RFP antibodies assist in generating fusion proteins without significant interference with native protein assembly and function, making them powerful tools for in vivo analyses.
