Description

Background

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) or sex steroid-binding globulin (SSBG) is a glycoprotein that binds to the two sex hormones: androgen and estrogen. The gene for SHBG is located on chromosome 17 on the short arm between the bands 17p12→p13. And this gene encodes a steroid binding protein that was first described as a plasma protein secreted by the liver but is now thought to participate in the regulation of steroid responses. The encoded protein transports androgens and estrogens in the blood, binding each steroid molecule as a dimer formed from identical or nearly identical monomers. Polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with polycystic ovary syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.

Synonyms

ABP, Androgen binding protein, SBP, Sex hormone-binding globulin, Sex steroid binding protein, Sex steroid-binding protein, SHBG, SHBG_ HUMAN, TeBG, Testis specific androgen binding protein, Testis-specific androgen-binding protein, Testosterone binding beta globulin, Testosterone estradiol binding globulin, Testosterone estrogen binding globulin, Testosterone-estradiol-binding globulin, Testosterone-estrogen-binding globulin

Immunogen

Expression system for standard: NSO; Immunogen sequence: L30-H402

Application Note

Useful in Sandwich ELISA for Quantitative Detection of Antigen. Aliquot 0.1ml per well of the 2nmol/L, 1nmol/L, 0.5nmol/L, 0.25nmol/L, 0.125nmol/L, 0.062nmol/L, 0.031nmol/L human SHBG standard solutions into the precoated 96-well plate. Add 0.1ml of the sample diluent buffer into the control well (Zero well). Add 0.1ml of each properly diluted sample of human cell culture supernates, serum and plasma(heparin, EDTA) to each empty well. It is recommended that each human SHBG standard solution and each sample be measured in duplicate.

Purity/Specificity

Natural and recombinant human SHBG. There is no detectable cross-reactivity with other relevant proteins.
